Homage to Dante and Vivaldi

The district of Castello

We start our walking in Riva degli Schiavoni, near the monument dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of Italy.

We then continue towards the Chiesa della Pietà to reach the institute of the same name where in the eighteenth century Antonio Vivaldi used to teach music to the "putte" who lived there.

We will then reach Campo della Bragora, also known as F.lli Bandiera e Moro, faced by small church whose foundation dates back to the 9th century but which took on its current form in the 15th century. It houses paintings by Vivarini and Cima da Conegliano. It is precisely in this church that the great musician was baptized.

We go on towards the very heart of the Republic, considered the first industrial chain in the world: the ARSENALE. We will talk about its construction, organization and importance and also about Dante Alighieri, the great poet whose death occurs immediately after his trip to Venice, who visited it and described it in the XXI canticle of hell. After Dante's death the Venetians, as a sign of gratitude for dedicating these immortal verses to the Arsenale, named the three houses of the Arsenal Superintendents after the names of the canticles of the Divina Commedia: the “caxa del Paradiso” (demolished during the Austrian domination) , the” caxa del Purgatorio” and the “caxa dell'Inferno”, these latter still visible today as well as the two small private bridges named bridge “del Purgatorio” and “dell’Inferno”.

The tour ends in Via Garibaldi.
