Hidden Venice

Dorsoduro and San Nicolò dei Mendicoli

Let’s discover the origins of Venice by visiting the Dorsoduro district, not very well known but full of hidden jems, among all the beautiful church of San Nicolò Mendicoli (one of the oldest in Venice), dedicated to San Nicola, protector of sailors.

Tradition says that this area was founded in the seventh century by the Padovani fleeing from the barbarians, on the remains of older buildings from the Roman era. It was an inhospitable area, formed only by sandbanks and sandy islets. It was then reclaimed in 1800 and for this reason it is often thought that Dorsoduro is one of the youngest sestieri in Venice.

Starting from Piazzale Roma, the present Venice car terminal, we will arrive after a short walk to the Church of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, a small thirteenth-century treasure chest hidden among suggestive streets, which we will be lucky enough to be able to visit inside, to admire sumptuous paintings of the sixteenth century telling the life of the Saint, to whom the character of Santa Claus is also linked. The external portico, typical of the churches of the time, is still preserved on the outside. The bell tower is also the original one from the 12th century.

The walk will continue towards the squero di San Trovaso, one of the last remaining in the city where gondolas are still built. It will thus be possible to admire one of the last shipwrights at work.

We continue along the Fondamenta delle Zattere, enjoying the view of the Giudecca island, to arrive at the atelier of a Venetian artist who designs and creates the finest jewels to wear, as well as accessories in crystals and Murano glass. In its splendid garden (one of the many small hidden pearls of Venice) we will all toast together with a good prosecco.
